History of Math

Manikyapura (Manki) is a small village about 4 km from Honnavar Taluk. It is a very small village, it was a difficult task for people to cross the Sharavathi river and reach Honnavar. With the need for their religious, social and cultural center here, all the elders of the society wanted to build a Math under the administration ten others and requested Shrimad Indirakanta Teertha Swamiji and sought the blessings of Swamiji for the construction of a Math. After having a discussion with ten others of the Samaj, Swamiji gave Ajna Rayasa in Shake 1823 Magha Vadya (19/02/1901) to construct the Math with the help of the public of Manki village. After obtaining the permission from the Swameeji the local committee collected funds from the public and in Shake 1826 Vaishakha Vadya Dashami installed the panchaloha statue of Shri Laxmi Venkatesha. Initially Shrimad Indirarakant Teertha Swamiji and later Shrimad Kamalakanta Teertha Swameeji extended financial help from the Partagali Math, for the routine Pooja Viniyoga at this Math. Thereafter the Archaks were performing the Pooja Viniyoga. Later due to migration of majority of local members for their employment/business etc. it has become very difficult for the Archaks to maintain the daily rituals of the Math and in Shake 1867 Partheeva Samvatsara Magha Shukla Dashami, Monday (11/02/1946) archaka family handed over the entire Shri Laxmi Venkatesh Temple along with land and buildings with full rights to Shri Dwarakanath Teertha Swamiji. From then onwards this Math became the Shakha Matha of Gokarna Partagali Jeevottam Math. Gradually in course of time due to blessings of the Swamiji there has been an increase in the population. Due to regular visit of the Swamiji devotional and social activities increased and this has resulted in shortage of space for religious and social activities. Again a request was made with Shri Vidyadhiraj Teertha Swamiji for acquiring new space to build a spacious Vastu to meet the demand. As per the orders of the Swamiji a committee of 17 members under the guidance of Shri Swamiji was formed and in 2 years by acquiring 21 guntas of land on 24.05.1981 foundation stone was laid for a new building and got it constructed. New Vastu with the installation of new Stone Idol was inaugurated by the lotus hands of Shri Vidyadhiraj Teerth Swamiji in Shake 1905 Vaishakha Vadya Shashthi (01/06/1983). Thereafter a new Vastu, for the Chaturmasa observation of Shri Swamiji with 7 Rooms, Pakashala, Agrashala, Gurubhavana for the stay of Swamiji, Sabhagaha in the first floor got constructed and in the year 1998 the Chaturmasa of Shri Swamiji was celebrated with pomp and gaiety.
