History of Math

Sixth Pontiff of the Math Tradition, Shri Ramachandra Teertha Sripada Vader Swamiji found four statues of Shri Rama, Seeta, Laxman and Hanumantha, beneath the ground; in the backyard of the Gokarna Math while carrying out the excavation work as per the divine instructions. While contemplating the possibility of installing these statues, got the divine instructions to carry the stone statues to the north and install them where the idols feel heavy. As per the divine instructions Swameeji started journey towards north from Gokarna, and travelled through Karwar, Mashe and Painginim. When they reached the Ashrama of Paingi Rhushi at Poinginium the Idols started becoming heavy. But there was no water in the place, so they were under dilemma as to how to install the statues here. In the night they got divine instructions that next day morning a Kamadhenu will appear before them. They were asked to offer pooja to the Kamadhenu and pray it to show the path to install the statue. They were also instructed to install the statue at the place where the Kamadhenu will start milking. Accordingly next day morning Kamadhenu appeared before the Swameeji. It was worshipped and requested to show the place for installing the statue. Kamadhenu instructed the Swameeji and parivar to follow her. It started travelling through the rough route of rivers, valleys and steep ghats towards north and reached the beautiful scenic place and started milking at the banks of Ishanyaplava Kushavati river. Here Swameeji installed the stone statues of Shri Rama, Laxmana and Seeta. This mountainous region place where Shri Ramachandra Tirtha Swamiji constructed the Math in 1578 Durmukhi Samvatsara (1656 AD) has became famous to be known as Partagali. Again the Kamadhenu started travelling to the north and the Swameeji and parivar followed it. Kamadhenu reached Rhushivana (present Rivan) and started milking. As per the divine instructions Swameeji installed the statue of Maruti and in due course of time constructed a Shakha Math there.
