History of Yellapur Math
Shri Lakshmi Narayana Venkatramana Math in Yallapur is the oldest math in the Upper Ghat region of the Sahyadri mountain range. Shri Bhuvijaya Ramachandra Tirtha, the 14th Swameeji of the Gokarna Math heritage, built the Yellapur Math in around 1790 AD.
Yellapur is a town in the Dense forests attached to Upper Ghat Coastal region. For travelling from Partagali, Rivan the Swameeji and the troupe used to reach Yellapur by travelling in Mene (Machula) through the thick forest, crossing the Kali River. From here they were travelling to other parts like Hubli, Sirsi and Siddapur. Yallapur was the Central place to reach different place on the upper ghat areas.
Earlier, Shri Raghavendra Swameeji of the Mantralaya Math wanted to visit Gokarna Kshetra during their Sanchaar and on realizing about a Vaishnav Math at Gokarna, wrote letter to Gokarna Math’s Peethadhipati. In the letter it was written “We have reached Tadas and it is our desire to visit Hatakeshwara Temple at Gokarna through Yellapur through your company” Accordingly, our Swameeji accompanied Shri Raghavendra Swameeji from Yallapur to Gokarna arranged for a Kshetra Darshana. It will be remembered as a significant event in the history of Yellapur Math.
In due course of time Samaaja Bandhavas started coming to Yellapur for Business and employment. They constructed their own houses. As the population of Saraswats increased, Swameeji laid foundation stone for a new Math Vastu, by relocating the math to a spacious site of 1 acre land besides the National High Way at Yellapur. Deva Pratishtha Karya for the New Math Vastu consisting of Garbhagraha, Gurubhavana, Archak Niwas, took place by the Lotus Hands of Shri Swameeji in Shake 1904 Dundhubhi Samvatsara, Falguna Bahula Dashami (08/04/1983). From then onwards it has become a routine of the visit of Shree Swameeji to Yellapur Math during the Pratishtha Vardhanti Utsava and prosperity took place in the Samaj Bandhavas thereafter. The Chaturmas of Swameeji at Yellapur in the year 2003 has been earmarked as Netra Deepak Chaturmas. Required renovation for the Gurubhavana, Spacious Sabhabhavan, spacious rooms, Vedavyaas Sabhagraha, over and above the Hospitality of Yellapur Samaja Bandhavas remained for ever in the minds of the Samaj Bandhavaas whoever have witnessed the Yellapur Chaturmasa.
